Fellow Democrats,

Weekly Agenda
First, I would like to thank all those who came to our first meeting. It was a blast and I hope that all of our new friends will continue to come by and participate in our meetings. We have a meeting this Tuesday in BSC 253B at 7:00 p.m. At the meeting, I would like to discuss filling executive board spots, our first event, and the semester as a whole. Included in this email is a description of the empty Executive Board spots.

New Attendance Programs
I would like to brief you on some new attendance incentive policies. All members who show up for the first four meeting will be entered into a raffle for a $20 gift certificate to Flying Cow Frozen Yogurt. Also, any College Democrats member (you are a member if you are on our email list) who brings new friends to any of our weekly meetings will be entered into a contest to win basketball tickets for next semester. I would also like to inform you that Eric Behna, who is V.P. of College Democrats has been chosen to serve as a intern for the Obama campaign. On behalf us all, I would like to offer my congratulations to him. He will be a tremendous resource as we continue to build resources for President Obama’s reelection campaign.

9/11 Remembrance
Tonight, Beta Theta Pi will be holding a September 11th memorial service at the clock tower. The service will begin at 8:00 p.m. Also, the 9:00 p.m. service at College Church will also honor those who lost their lives in that horrible attack. I would like to leave you with the words of President Franklin Roosevelt, “America has been the New World in all tongues, to all peoples, not because this continent was a new-found land, but because all those who came here believed that they could create upon this continent a new life-a life that should be new in freedom.”

We will be meeting tonight (4/13) in Baracha Hall 216 at 7:00 p.m. Our discussion topic will be immigration reform and its possible impacts on the United States. Please bring your thoughts, opinions, and ideas so that we may have a productive discussion!

Discussion Meeting Tonight: The Budget and the Looming Shutdown

The College Democrats will have a meeting tonight at 7pm in Beracha Hall room 216. This week will move to a new meeting format which emphasizes the discussion of issues over the more mundane organizational business that we have been discussing over the previous weeks. The Federal Budget will be the topic of discussion for this week. Please bring thoughts, opinions, and information regarding this issue to the meeting so that we may have a fruitful discussion.

OFFICIAL ENDORSEMENTS: APRIL 5TH GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION

The Saint Louis University College Democrats are proud to endorse the following candidates and positions that will appear on the ballot for SLU Students voting in the April 5th General Municipal Election. Endorsements decisions are made by the SLU College Democrats Executive Board, and may not reflect the views of all members, or of the University as a whole. Endorsements are made only in contested races. For a sample ballot, visit the Saint Louis Board of Election Commissioners.

Candidate Endorsements:

For President of the Board of Alderman: Lewis E. Reed

Since first being elected to this position in April of 2007, Lewis Reed has proven to be an exceptional leader. He has demonstrated an ability to build coalitions and get things done for the city. Through instruments such as Tax Increment Financing, he has spearheaded efforts to develop the city with smart investments. Reed is also to thank for bringing nearly 70 miles of urban bike lanes to St. Louis, creating a more sustainable, safe, and environmentally friendly infrastructure. Make an investment in our city’s future by voting for Lewis Reed.

For Trustee for Subdistrict #2 of the Junior College District of St. Louis:

The College Democrats have elected not to endorse in this non-partisan race. We encourage you to read up on the four candidates and make an educated vote!

Proposition Endorsements:

Vote YES on Proposition E

Proposition E will allow St. Louis to continue the city’s 1% earnings tax for a period of five years. The earnings tax accounts for $141 million, or about one third of the city’s revenue. If the earnings tax were eliminated, the city would face massive budget shortfalls, and be forced to make massive cuts in public service, education, and infrastructure. The city could be forced to extract revenue from other sources, such as increases in sales taxes.

The earnings tax is an essential source of revenue for our city to move forward. Vote YES on Proposition E to build a stronger St. Louis.

Political Round Table Discussion Wednesday!

Democrats,

Instead of a meeting this week, we will be attending Political Round Table’s event “Revolutions in the Middle East and Northern Africa” as a group. The discussion begins on Wednesday at 7pm in Busch Student Center room 171. Below is information about the discussion from PRT:

Topic: Revolutions in the Middle East and Northern Africa

Discussion Questions: What justifies a revolution? If it is justified, then when do we need peaceful demonstrations? Violent revolutions? What is the nature of the relationship between governments and their peoples? How should the world respond to the protests occurring in the Middle East and Africa? How does this affect global politics?

This is going to be a great discussion! It’s highly relevant and a it’s a great topic of interest! Additionally, we now have a confirmed speaker.

Dr. Bahar Bastani, a doctor at SLU’s medical center, is a Muslim spiritual leader and community member who will be giving his perspectives and opinions on the different revolts, specifically Iran and Egypt. He is quite a big name in the local community, and are honored to have him!!

Dearest Democrats,

We will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Senate Chambers for our regularly scheduled meeting. However, next week we will transition to our new meeting time which will be on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in a location that is to be determined. I will notify you as soon as possible regarding our new meeting locations. In other news, on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. our 2011-2012 budget will come under review by the SGA Finance Committee. The Executive Board will participate in the meeting, but all other members are free to attend. I hope everyone had a very safe and relaxing Spring Break.

Please fill out the survey below about your preferences for the frequency and timing of our meetings.

We will not have a meeting tomorrow, so enjoy the extra time to study for midterms!

Also, don’t forget that tomorrow, Tuesday, March 8th is the municipal primary election. If you are registered to vote on campus, the only position you will be voting on is President of the Board of Alderman, for which Lewis Reed is running for re-election unopposed. Nevertheless, it is important to vote because it demonstrates that students are active in the political process and our needs are worth paying attention to.
