Discussion Meeting Tonight: The Budget and the Looming Shutdown

The College Democrats will have a meeting tonight at 7pm in Beracha Hall room 216. This week will move to a new meeting format which emphasizes the discussion of issues over the more mundane organizational business that we have been discussing over the previous weeks. The Federal Budget will be the topic of discussion for this week. Please bring thoughts, opinions, and information regarding this issue to the meeting so that we may have a fruitful discussion.

Political Round Table Discussion Wednesday!

Democrats,

Instead of a meeting this week, we will be attending Political Round Table’s event “Revolutions in the Middle East and Northern Africa” as a group. The discussion begins on Wednesday at 7pm in Busch Student Center room 171. Below is information about the discussion from PRT:

Topic: Revolutions in the Middle East and Northern Africa

Discussion Questions: What justifies a revolution? If it is justified, then when do we need peaceful demonstrations? Violent revolutions? What is the nature of the relationship between governments and their peoples? How should the world respond to the protests occurring in the Middle East and Africa? How does this affect global politics?

This is going to be a great discussion! It’s highly relevant and a it’s a great topic of interest! Additionally, we now have a confirmed speaker.

Dr. Bahar Bastani, a doctor at SLU’s medical center, is a Muslim spiritual leader and community member who will be giving his perspectives and opinions on the different revolts, specifically Iran and Egypt. He is quite a big name in the local community, and are honored to have him!!

Meeting Tuesday!

Dearest Democrats,

We will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Senate Chambers for our regularly scheduled meeting. However, next week we will transition to our new meeting time which will be on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in a location that is to be determined. I will notify you as soon as possible regarding our new meeting locations. In other news, on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. our 2011-2012 budget will come under review by the SGA Finance Committee. The Executive Board will participate in the meeting, but all other members are free to attend. I hope everyone had a very safe and relaxing Spring Break.

Election Tomorrow, Meeting Preference Survey

Democrats,

Please fill out the survey below about your preferences for the frequency and timing of our meetings.

We will not have a meeting tomorrow, so enjoy the extra time to study for midterms!

Also, don’t forget that tomorrow, Tuesday, March 8th is the municipal primary election. If you are registered to vote on campus, the only position you will be voting on is President of the Board of Alderman, for which Lewis Reed is running for re-election unopposed. Nevertheless, it is important to vote because it demonstrates that students are active in the political process and our needs are worth paying attention to.

Meeting Tuesday!

Democrats,

We will meet in the SGA Chambers on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Furthermore, expect a survey/future plans sheet from me sometime this week. Bring a friend!

This Week in College Democrats

Democrats,

We will have a meeting this Tuesday (February 15) in the BSC Senate Chambers at 7pm. I would really like to have an open discussion regarding the direction of our organization, so your presence would be sincerely appreciated. We will be discussing several important topics such as meeting times and the 2011-2012 budget. I hope to see all of you at the meeting, feel free to bring a friend!

Let Me Introduce Myself…

My fellow Democrats,

My name is Maxwell Jordan and I will be serving as leader of our organization next year. I would like to introduce myself to you and let you know a little bit about my plans for us next year. First, I am Junior studying Political Science and I participate in several organizations on campus such as the Great Issues Committee. If you don’t know me that is because I was absent last semester due to my internship with the United States Department of State. I spend the semester working for our Mission to the United Nations Agencies in Rome, Italy. It was a tremendous experience that has validated everything I believe about our great country. I hope that we may get to know each other and build an effective political organization that can dramatically impact local and state elections. Please see below for my plan regarding how we can become a strong and resilient campus organization.

Membership

An organization is nothing without a strong and stable core of members. It is my hope that we can increase our membership and meeting attendance rates over the next year. Currently, I am exploring moving our meeting time to better accommodate our member’s schedules. Hopefully, within the next week or so I can send you a survey regarding our organization that can include this topic. Membership will be my top priority and I will not rest until we have an active membership of at least 25 people that participate in vibrant meetings. I will share more on this with you at a later date. Until then, please bring friends, coworkers, and roommates to our meetings!

Fundraising

It is my intention to explore new methods of fundraising for our organization. Some of these potential methods include developing a ActBlue page and other politically based forms of fundraising. We need to utilize our strong alumni base so that we may be able to solicit funds that can help with us with our overall organizational mission.

Voter Registration

I would like to make voter registration a significant priority for the next. People on this campus need to have the ability to exercise their constitutional rights as American citizens. It is my hope that we can partner with several organizations to create the largest voter registration drive in our school’s history.

Dynamic Events

I hope that together as an organization we can come up with a slate of dynamic events that can capture the attention of the university. We need to start early due to the school’s new speaker policy, and it is my hope to get you some preliminary information on this topic soon.

Organizational Improvements

I would like to refine our organizational practices and develop new procedures that can make our organization strong and effective. It is my hope that these new processes can be passed down in order to create continuity and institutional memory.

In the end, student organizations are purely a reflection of membership. It is my sincere hope that at the end of the 2011-2012 school year we can look back and say that it was the time we made our breakthrough.

All the best,

Max Jordan
